Jeanne plopped a chunk of metal—deformed by a deep crater—on her manager’s desk. “We absolutely must do something!” she declared. She was referring to the problem of orbital debris in space—stuff like rocks, sand, and bits of metal that can crash into a satellite, shuttle, or space station. She had the prop to prove the devastating effects collision: destroyed space vehicles, destroyed experiments, destroyed lives.

“It’s unbelievable the damage that can be done by things going at that speed,” explains Jeanne. “I really cared about this problem—it was a safety thing—so I persisted and became a real pain.”

Space debris travels at a speed of eighteen thousand miles per hour. That’s three hundred miles per minute, and five miles per second. If you could travel at that speed, you could get to a store two and a half miles away—and back home—in one second.
